Spitfire

The Supermarine Spitfire is possibly the most iconic WW2 fighter plane ever produced.  Designed by R.J. Mitchell, the thin elliptical wing chosen for its superior aerodynamics, small head-on fuselage section and extra attention to streamlining all came together to produce a very elegant and fast fighter aircraft.

The unpainted prototype Supermarine Type F37/34 first flew on the 5th of March 1936Mk 1 Spitfires entered service with RAF 19 Squadron, Duxford on the 4th of August 1938, powered by a 1,030-hp Merlin II engine and eight Browning 0.303-in machine guns.

The main variant of the Spitfire Mk. IA was powered by the famous Rolls Royce V-12 Merlin II engine. This produced 1,230 hp and drove a two bladed wooden propeller, giving the early Spitfire a top level speed of about 360 mph, and a best climb rate of 2,530 ft./min.  Later marks of Spitfire included the Mk. V of 1941, which for the first time introduced "clipped" wing tips to increase the roll rate. The Mk. V had a top speed of up to 374 mph. Best rate of climb was 2,900 ft./min.

On the 20th February 1948, almost twelve years from the prototype's first flight, the last production Spitfire, VN496, an F Mk 24, left the production line. Some 22,500 Spitfires were built and now only a few dozen are kept in flying condition.

While not externally appearing to change substantially, the Spitfire was massively developed. The Mark 24 was one-third faster than the Mk I in level flight. It had a rate of climb 80% faster, despite a maximum all-up weight over 6 790 lb heavier, and had 5 times the firepower. Despite the early origins of the design, and major theoretical criticisms, the performance of the wing near to the speed of sound was not bettered until well into the jet era.

Production of some 40 different variants of the Spitfire took place throughout the war and after. They served in every combat area, operating as fighters, fighter-bombers, reconnaissance aircraft and carrier-based fighters with the Royal Navy.

Add some excitement to your flying with the CS Spitfire.  The model flies with the same precision and agility as the original Spitfire - it's a true pilots plane.  Re-live those historic times when only the best of the best were chosen to fly the 'Ferrari' of the aircraft world in a life and death struggle against the enemy.

The fantastic CS Spitfire presented here was built by Gaston Vanzet, from Woolamai, Victoria, Australia.

All the EPP components included in the kit are produced with a computer controlled dual axis cutting machine and finished by hand to ensure the quality of each part is correct and ready to assemble.
