PC-9
Pilatus Flugzeugwerke AG was founded in late 1939 by Oerlikon, Switzerland's leading arms manufacturer, to manufacture aircraft for the Swiss domestic market, and in particular the air force, the Flugwaffe.
The first PC-9 was officially rolled out at Stans, Switzerland, on 9 May 1984, having flown two days earlier, and was registered HB-HPA. While an evolutionary development of the PC-7, the PC-9 has little structural commonality with its predecessor.
The PC-9 proved to be a winner, to date over 140 airframes have been sold to a wide range of nations. Two notable variants are the Luftwaffe's PC-9B target tug and the RAAF PC-9/A.
The key to the PC-9's superb performance is the 1,150 SHP PT6A-62 turboprop. The aircraft fuselage is a semi-monocoque structure, with the tandem cockpits staggered in height by 6.3" to provide better rear seat visibility through the single piece Perspex canopy.
The PC-9 is a conventional airframe and powerplant design which provides a good blend of handling and performance, approximating very closely the characteristics of the late forties air superiority fighter. This is evident in climb rate, acceleration and turn performance, all of which compare very closely to these classic aircraft. These attributes, combined with the digital EFIS, provide the perfect environment for introducing beginners to the behaviour of a high performance tactical aircraft.
Pilatus PC-9 Tech Specs: Powerplant: P&W PT6A-62 turboprop, Wingspan: 33ft 2in, Length: 35ft 1in, Max Speed: 360mph, Crew: Two.
The PC-9 is in service with many Air Forces around the world, including the Royal Australian Air Force. We chose the PC-9 for its good looks and the expectation it would fly well as a model. We weren't disappointed, It flies very well, no doubt helped by the larger than normal tail surfaces providing positive pitch and directional control. The model rolls and loops quickly and accurately, and it looks GREAT!
All the EPP components included in the kit are produced with a computer controlled dual axis cutting machine and finished by hand to ensure the quality of each part is correct and ready to assemble.
