Canterbury Sailplanes has grown to be one of the largest EPP Model Manufacturers in the world, all thanks to our happy customers spreading the word. Canterbury Sailplanes models are made from EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) which is an amazingly resilient material, initially designed for packing computers, it's perfect for building model aeroplanes. The normal bumps and thumps the model gets while you learn to fly won't damage it, EPP doesn't break easily, so you can keep flying, learning and having fun! Most of our gliders are designed for flying off a slope, which is an ideal way for beginners to get started in this fantastic sport. Slope soaring provides the best value for money of any form of radio controlled model aircraft flying today. All you need is your model and radio gear and a suitable slope to fly off! No winches, no extra batteries and chargers, no messy fuel, engines or expensive starter gear. When the wind hits the slope it's pushed upwards, that rising air provides lift for gliders to soar on for as long as your batteries can last (hours!). Slope soaring is clean, it's free and it's heaps of fun!!! Check out our range of models - there's something for everyone and we're adding new models all the time, so make sure you come back again to see what's new. Our History Canterbury Sailplanes has been manufacturing R/C Gliders since 1991. We started with a Ready to Fly F3B model called the Mach One. As the first readily available, cost effective F3B model in New Zealand, the Mach One helped change the face of New Zealand competition soaring. Canterbury Sailplanes went on to manufacture The Hornet F3B model, composite 2 Metre wings, Slope Racers, commercial work and the current range of models presented on our website. Canterbury Sailplanes were the first to fly and manufacture foamies in NZ and have gone on to produce over 20,000 foamies of various designs. We're now an international business designing and manufacturing EPP Models. Canterbury Sailplanes started as a partnership between John Ensoll and David Griffin. John at the time was a retired Aircraft Engineer, and Dave an Air NZ 737 Captain. Carey (A tool maker by trade) and Diane Burr purchased Canterbury Sailplanes from Dave and Glennis Griffin in January 2005, and relocated the business to Nelson. In the 4 years that Carey and Diane owned Canterbury Sailplanes, they added 8 new models to the collection, as well as dramatically improving the whole design and manufacturing process. This has ensured that Canterbury Sailplanes continues to produce the worlds finest EPP sailplanes. In June 2008 Shane and Kirstie Kennington started negotiating to purchase Canterbury Sailplanes from Carey and Diane Burr, and by late January 2009, they had successfully relocated the business back to Christchurch (where it all began). Shane is a qualified Air New Zealand Aircraft Engineer who is at home maintaining and modifying 737-300, 400, 700, 800’s, A320’s, C130’s, 727-100’s and 200’s, 767, 747-400, 777-200ER, ATR 42 and 72 aircraft. ![]() ![]() Shane’s modeling career only spans 10 years, but during this time he has always designed and built his own aircraft due to not being satisfied with what was on the market. Shane and Kirstie have three young children and also run another business together, which is LollyShop, a We look forward to continuing and building on the legacy of Canterbury Sailplanes, and serve all the people that get great satisfaction from flying R/C Sailplanes. Whats more we look forward to continuing the technical innovation that Canterbury Sailplanes has been known for around the world.
